Waco Outdoor Activities

As the largest state in the lower 48, Texas is a glorious mix of urban areas and wide-open spaces. When our real estate agents want a quick escape from the daily routine, they head to these great outdoor spots near Waco for a little fresh air.

  1. Cameron Park - 2601 N. University Parks, Waco, TX 76708
Cameron Park is a 400-acre urban oasis alongside the Brazos River. With its majestic trees, breathtaking cliffside overlooks, and 20 miles of multi-use trails, you'll find it hard to believe downtown Waco is right next door. Check out Jacob's Ladder, one of the pet-friendly park's most popular features, a zigzagging staircase built more than a century ago. Thanks to its convenient location, just minutes from Waco homes for sale, Cameron Park makes a great getaway any day of the week. Hours are 6 a.m. until midnight daily.

  2. Lake Waco Wetlands - 1752 Eichelberger Crossing Rd., China Spring, TX 76633
Waco is surrounded by a diverse landscape that's home to numerous species of wildlife and plants. When the City Council voted to raise the water level by seven feet, Lake Waco Wetlands was created to help preserve the natural habitat. During a walk along the wetland trails, not far from China Spring homes for sale, you may spot great blue herons, tree frogs, white-tailed deer, water lilies, and cattails. Admission is free, but donations and sponsorships are welcome. Lake Waco Wetlands are open 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. weekdays and alternating Saturdays.

  3. Cameron Park Zoo - 1701 N. 4th St., Waco, TX 76707
A visit to the zoo turns everyone into a kid. Cameron Park Zoo provides a fascinating look at 300 species of animals as they were meant to be seen. The 52 acres of lush vegetation, along with a scenic lake and waterfalls, allow the animals to roam in their natural surroundings. In 2009, the zoo opened its most recent exhibit, the Asian Forest. Enjoy a close-up sight of exotic and endangered animals such as orangutans, Komodo dragons, and Sumatran tigers. Take a break at Grammy Nell's playground, where the little ones can cool off in the splash area. Admission is $12.50 for adults and $9.50 for kids aged 3-12. Hours are 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Sunday.

  4. Brazos Bluffs Ranch - 7007 Gholson Rd., Waco, TX 76705
What Texan hasn't daydreamed about being a cowboy or cowgirl? Saddle up at Brazos Bluffs Ranch, where horseback riding is one of the main attractions. Explore the countryside on a 90-minute trail ride or two-hour sunset ride. Celebrate an anniversary or special occasion with a romantic private sunset ride that includes a campfire, wine, charcuterie board, and s'mores. Experienced guides help even greenhorns feel comfortable. Visit the website for pricing, availability, and lodging options.

  5. Spray Parks - Various locations
The average daily temperature during summer in Waco is in the 90s, making water a valuable commodity. Parks & Recreation operates six free spray pads in parks around the city, including Cameron Park. Wherever you live in Waco, you're just down the street from a cool, refreshing mist that lets you beat that summertime heat.

After a day in the great Texas outdoors, head back to the comfort of your Waco home. Whether you're in the market to buy or sell, contact us for cheerful and professional help.
