Cameron Park

Cameron Park spans 416 acres, making it one of the largest municipal parks in Texas, and offers many activities for both locals and tourists. It's great for hiking, biking, sports, and much more; it's also home to some of the most beautiful views in Texas. There are plenty of Waco homes for sale in the area, giving you access to all sorts of great outdoor activities. Here are some of the things you can see and do there.

Events and Gatherings

If you're looking to have a party with friends or take your kids someplace for the afternoon, there are a variety of locations you can explore within Cameron Park. The Northern Gateway has a beautiful pavilion -perfect for picnics-, a playground, and a baseball diamond. Sitting atop the trails, it has convenient trail access and is right near Lovers' Leap, a limestone bluff above the Bosque River with stunning views and a fascinating legend behind it, of Native American origins.

Another area you can enjoy is Anniversary Park. It's home to another of Cameron Park's playground areas, it also has a picnic pavilion and other amenities for parties and gatherings. It's right next to Miss Nellie's Pretty Place, which boasts an array of gorgeous, multicolored flowers, as well as a fountain.

Lawson's Point is a smaller area. With no playground, it's better for adult gatherings, but it does have two shelters for picnics, as well as a walking loop, open grass fields, and trail access.

There's a total of three playground areas, equipped with swings, slides, climbing obstacles, some even feature water misters and splash pads! Make sure to bring your swimsuit. Other points of interest include Pecan Bottoms, Emmons Cliff, Mouth of the Bosque, and Circle Point.

Hiking and Outdoor Activities

There are plenty of trails in Cameron Park for hiking and mountain biking. One of the most challenging and worthwhile hikes is Jacob's Ladder and Rock Shelter. Built over 100 years ago, this winding staircase has over 100 steps, through trees and other flora, to the top of the bluff, where you're met with a breathtaking view. Thorough renovations and regular upkeep help maintain this beautiful trail safe for hikers despite its age.

If sports are more your thing, Cameron Park is also home to disc golf courses. It's a great weekend activity for you and your friends. There are options to choose from with a 23-hole and an 18-hole course, these are also a great way to explore the park and take in some views. Weekly tournaments are held by the Waco Disc Golf Association.

Zoo

If you want to explore wildlife from all over the world, check out Cameron Park Zoo -they house over 1,700 animals representing around 300 species. It provides not just exhibits but experiences. Look for the exhibit simulating an abandoned temple in the Asian Forest, home to orangutans, Komodo dragons, and a Sumatran tiger habitat. Meanwhile, Brazos River Country recreates the journey of the Spanish explorers of old, and their quest for cities of gold, and the various wild animals they encountered along the way. This includes a 50,000-gallon marine aquarium inside a sunken Spanish galleon.

In addition to the live animals, Cameron Park is also home to another kind of zoo: the Waco Sculpture Zoo. A collection of art from different artists across the country, showcasing sculptures of elephants, turtles, foxes, and various other animals, in different styles and scenarios.
