How to Make Your Home More Organized in the New Year
As homeowners, we all know that a ton of clutter or a big mess can cause unneeded stress and anxiety. If you're looking to make a major change in 2022, think about how a well-organized home could make a difference.
Organizing your home might seem like a big task, but with a little bit of preparation, it's totally feasible. Our real estate agents enjoy sharing strategies for improving home organization, and here are some of the best tips we share with clients:
- Start By Decluttering
Decluttering is an important first step to home organization. By decluttering first, you'll have less to worry about when it's time to organize. Go through each room of the house and determine what needs to go. We know this is easier said than done, so try to consider the frequency in which you use the item or if the item brings you happiness. Once you've collected a large load of clutter, try to sell some items online or haul it over to your local thrift shop. If you decide to donate the items, make sure to get a receipt and keep it for tax purposes! - Tackle One Room At A Time
Many homeowners muster up enough motivation to organize the home, but quickly lose steam because it seems like a massive undertaking. Instead of setting out to organize the entire home over one weekend, make small goals over the course of the year. By going room by room, you can break down your goal into smaller, more manageable tasks. - Add Entryway Storage
Having a place to easily store coats, keys, umbrellas, and gloves can make it easy to keep your entryway organized and clutter-free. When these items don't have a dedicated place to go, we tend to leave them around the house. Cube storage, a decorative chest, or dresser drawers can make stylish additions to your entryway, while also helping you to stay organized. If you're short on storage space, you might need to get creative. Are there unused storage areas throughout your home? Perhaps under the staircase, at the top of the closet, or under the bed? A lot of times, storage space isn't entirely obvious, but it might be easy to find some valuable unused real estate in your home. Take an inventory of all unused space and see where there are opportunities to use it. - Drawer Dividers Can Have A Big Impact
If you have a junk drawer or two, it's time to bring some order to chaos. Not only does a well-organized junk drawer look better, but it'll also make it much easier to find things you need. Drawer organizers are the best way to get a handle on your junk drawers. We recommend investing in some adjustable inserts that can easily fit your specific drawer. - Use Storage Bins For Toys And Games
If your kid's belongings are creating a significant amount of clutter, get them under control with a storage bin system. Stackable storage bins are a cheap and effective way to categorize and store your kid's toys and games-- plus they look great. By labeling each bin, you can also teach your kids to put away their belongings once they're done playing. - Vacuum Sealed Bags For "Soft" Items
Vacuum sealed bags are great for storing bulky items that you use seasonally or rotate through. While these only work for "soft" items, they do help limit the space these items occupy. We recommend using them for coats, sweaters, comforters, etc. They're affordable and work with vacuums that have a hose attachment.
