Waco is the place to be, not just due to its convenient location between major metropolitan areas, its up-and-coming vibe, great entrepreneurial community, and friendly residents, but it's also a great launching point if you love to spend time out on the water. While an ocean may be a few hours' drive away, there are plenty of other options nearby. While there are lakes, rivers, parks, and specialty campsites and resorts nearby, this article will focus on lakes. Whether you love to go fishing, swimming, taking your boat out, or just spending a few hours relaxing by the shore, there are plenty of places for you to choose from. Our real estate agents know the area well, and they recommend visiting any of the following lakes when you're craving time on the water.

  • Lake Waco: Lake Shore Drive, Waco, TX 76708
Lake Waco is a large, 8,000+ acre lake that rests just outside central Waco. You can access the lake from various parks, including Airport Beach, Flatrock Park, and Midway Park. Most of the beaches and access points are located along Lake Shore Drive. With 10 public boat ramps and a minimal fee for ramp use, it is very accessible and affordable to plan your day out on the lake. To take a dip in Lake Waco, make sure to access it from 'Airport Beach' or 'Twin Bridges.' 'Airport Beach'  has a few picnic shelters and lovely views of the water, perfect for a day outing. Midway Park is a great place to launch a boat. It has camping spots, restrooms, and an ADA-accessible boat ramp. Droughts and heavy rainfall affect different amenities, so make sure to keep an eye on the weather and the news for updates. Waco Lake is maintained by the US Army Corp of Engineers, they will have updates regarding closures.

  • Live Oak Lake: 1445 Spring Lake Rd., Waco, TX 76705
Live Oak Lake is a small 'hotel-resort' crafted around beautiful cabins nestled around a small lake. Each of the cabins offers different amenities, but all have a bathroom and are equipped with hot tubs.

When camping at Live Oak Lake, guests can enjoy common areas, fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, boating, and picnics by the water. There's a large public dock and a wood rowboat that guests can borrow. Kids love the swings, which are set under a gorgeous wood pergola.

  • Fort Parker Lake: Texas Highway 14, Mexia, TX 76667
Fort Parker Lake is located within Fort Parker State Park near Mexia homes for sale, which makes it a great place to visit with kids. When you're tired of swimming or fishing in the lake, there are trails to walk down and fields where you can kick a ball around.

Fort Parker Lake is a common destination for fishing outings. Efforts are in place to maintain it stocked with white bass, crappie, and catfish. The lake has become quite shallow in recent years, as such, boating on the lake is not advised, and most people fish from the shore.

  • Navarro Mills Lake: Texas Route 31, Navarro Mills, TX 76679
